Maui Ocean Center

Aquarium in Māʻalaea focused on Hawaiian marine life. A good rainy-day or family-friendly activity.

Māʻalaea Harbor

Departure point for many whale-watching, sailing, and ocean tours. If snorkeling is your priority, consider a smaller tour that visits less-crowded coastal sites instead of Molokini.

Tin Roof Maui 🍔

ʻĀhihi-Kīnaʻu Natural Area Reserve 🏖

Molokini Crater (Not Recommended)

We do not recommend Molokini snorkeling tours. The crater receives heavy daily boat traffic, and research found that reef-fish biomass increased when tourism stopped and quickly declined when visitors returned. A Molokini trip is also expensive and takes much of a day when Maui has excellent shore and coastal snorkeling alternatives. Read the University of Hawaiʻi summary of the study.

Keawakapu Beach 🏖

West Maui

Lahaina

Lahaina is gradually reopening following the August 2023 wildfire. The harbor area and portions of the historic district have reopened for daytime access, and Front Street is scheduled to reopen more broadly on August 1, 2026. Rebuilding remains active, so stay out of fenced and private areas, support open local businesses, and check the County of Maui recovery updates before visiting.
